The utility reached “almost 100,000” meters deployed in March this year, under a program that “aims to replace around 1 million traditional water meters with upgraded digital meters by 2029.”

It will now utilise an “end-to-end IoT solution combining narrowband-IoT connectivity, SIM and device management to enable deployment of [the] smart meters at scale,” TPG Telecom said in a statement.

“This allows South East Water to … connect the NB-IoT smart meters, reduce costs and security risks, and provide the critical monitoring and enhanced coverage needed for its extensive network of water meters and pipe network.”

The deployment of the smart meters is said to be the largest of its type in Australia.

South East Water serves 1.7 million customers “from Port Melbourne through to Portsea and across towards Gippsland.”

TPG Telecom’s general manager of enterprise and government customer sales and solutions Chris Russo said the connectivity and related services “will provide South East Water with the insights and capability it needs to better manage water use for its customers and the environment.”
